Women Serving the Global Community

Soroptimist International is a vibrant, dynamic organisation for today’s professional and business women. We are the world's leading international women's organisation, focused exclusively on building a better world for women and girls.  We are the largest women's service organisation and through our Consultative Status at the United Nations, we strive for equality, peace and international understanding. We have clubs from Argentina to Zimbabwe.

Perhaps you feel that your circle of friends is too insular and you would like to meet women from different walks of life? Or maybe you find that, although you enjoy your job, it demands so much of your energy that you are becoming very single-tracked? Y ou might feel that society is becoming increasingly selfish, but you are powerless to help others meaningfully. You would like to put something back into your community, but are unsure where to start.

It could be that you are aware your knowledge on human rights issues is scanty. But how do you really address the sex trade, child labour and the status of women single-handedly?

Soroptimist International could be the answer. It is about women working together for others, but also for themselves.

Who can join?

Membership of a Soroptimist Club is by invitation and care is taken to ensure that each club represents a wide range of occupations. Members are chosen for their individual qualities as well as their status in their chosen area of work.

To be eligible to receive such an invitation, you must be working in a management or professional capacity, or in an occupation with similar status or responsibility.

SI Cockermouth and District

There are 29 members at the moment with 8 new members having joining us in the last couple of years.

This Cockermouth and District Soroptimists International club was set up in 1981 and over the last 29 years the club has been involved in:

  • Programme action (community service) lobbying and raising awareness locally, nationally and internationally on human rights and the status of women, economic and environmental issues.
  • Fundraising for local, national and international causes.
  • Forging friendships with other Soroptimists locally, nationally and internationally.

We are an active club with most of the members getting involved in the numerous activities we do. Some are more interested in lobbying, whereas others enjoy the fundraising. We all like to participate in the social side of the club.  Our members actively engage with the other soroptimist clubs in the Northern region through shared projects and study days. Members attend the national (Federation) conference annually and actively contribute to the international projects through local programme action.
